Description
Firefly viewing is a traditional Japanese summer activity. Fireflies symbolize ‘love’ in Japanese poetry and has a special place in Japanese culture .
It is said that there was a time when fireflies outnumbered the neon lights of Tokyo.
With rapid urbanization this phenomenon has changed; therefore in the months of June and July, hotarumatsuri (firefly festivals) are held throughout the country and provide the people a chance to have a glimpse of this totally magical creature. Even in big cities, many festivals are held at shrines, near rivers or even in the gardens of luxury hotels, as long as the conditions are favorable enough for fireflies to appear.
Purely nostalgic, people go to see the pretty lights emitted by the fireflies as they create a serene and enchanting view.
---In this painting, two children are surrounded by several fireflies in a quiet night in a village. It’s a completely different world! They are watching the dance of the fireflies –the magical view, only the nature can give. The stars are witnessing this alluring scene. The children are transported to the mysterious beauty of nature.
