Description
In Sanskrit, the word ‘Lakshmi’ means ‘goal’; Lakshmi represents the goal of life - both material and spiritual prosperity.
-The red sari -indicates the colour of creative activity. The golden lining indicates plenty.
-The four arms -represent the four directions in space and thus symbolize Her omnipresence and omnipotence. The four hands also represent the four ends of human life :Righteousness, Desires, Wealth and Liberation from the birth and death cycle.
-The front hands represent the activity in the physical world and the back hands indicate the spiritual activities that lead to spiritual perfection.
- As the right side of the body symbolizes activity, a lotus in the back right hand conveys that one must perform all duties in the world, as this leads to ‘liberation’ which is symbolized by a lotus in her back left hand. The front left hand indicates wealth and prosperity and the front right hand indicates bestowing blessings upon humans.
-Sitting on lotus means - "live in the world, but do not be possessed by the world". The lotus keeps smiling on surface of water. Its origin is in mud, deep under water but its flowering is above the water-surface. Detachment and evolution is the message of this symbol. While its roots are in the mud, its stalk rises clearly through the murky water, with its petals blossoming above, untouched by the mud. It is a symbol of rising above the material world through divinity, of being detached in the midst of negative influences. Like the lotus, as the Goddess of Prosperity, Lakshmi shows how to transcend material wealth for spiritual progress.
