Ikebana is the ancient Japanese art of flower arrangement. In Japanese, ‘ike’ means ‘alive’ or ‘arrange’ and ‘bana’ means flower.
The purpose of ikebana is more than just decorative. It is a spiritual process to appreciate the beauty and to develop a closeness with nature and merge the indoors and outdoors.
Contrary to the idea of just placing flowers in vase, Ikebana also emphasizes other areas of the plant such as its stems, bud, branches leaves and twigs as it aims to bring out the inner qualities of flowers and other live materials and express emotion.
Ikebana puts emphasis on shape, line, form, minimalism, aesthetics, and balance. The importance of space, which is not meant to be filled, but created and preserved through the arrangements is emphasized.

Tara Krishna,PhD is based in Tokyo and her artworks include pencil drawings, watercolor and acrylic paintings. She holds a BSc,MSc,MPhil and doctorate. She has published scholarly articles and research papers in national and international academic peer reviewed/refereed journals. She had interest in drawing and painting since childhood but could not pursue the same due to her busy academic life. Currently she creates artworks whenever possible after her working hours.
