Description
Camellias are native to eastern and southern Asia. The word "tsubaki" in Japanese means camellia. Camellia is one of Japan’s finer flowering trees. It blooms from winter to spring. However, it is not uncommon to see this tree flowering during snowfall. This cold weather flowering habit has earned it one common name, ‘rose of winter’. Due to the relative lack of insects in winter, the flowers are often pollinated by small birds.
Camellias have been preferred for tea ceremonies or tea house. It became a status symbol for cultural figures to have camellias, and various varieties of camellias had been created during the Edo Period. A fondness for camellias spread among commoners.
Camellias have many commercial uses. Camellia oil has been used for various purposes. Tsubaki oil, also known as ‘Camellia oil’ or ‘Tea Seed oil’ in the west, is derived from its bulbous fruits and is used as a multipurpose product, mainly for cooking and cosmetic purposes (for hair and skin treatment) .This oil has been used to make all sorts of beauty products such as tsubaki shampoo, camellia oil for hair and tsubaki oil for skin. These products are hugely popular in Japan as well as in the west. Moreover this oil is also used as a machine oil.
